Exercises for Osteoporosis
Exercises for Osteoporosis
Because of the risk of fracture to those with Osteoporosis, certain exercises may not be safe for everyone. Be sure to ask your health care professional before starting an exercise program. There are three types of physical activities recommended for those suffering from Osteoporosis.
Strength training
Strength training uses free weights, weight machines, resistance bands and/or water exercises to strengthen muscle and bone in the arms and spine, resulting in a decrease in mineral loss to the bones.
Weight-bearing aerobics
Weight-bearing aerobics involve aerobic exercise while standing, which allows your bones to support your weight. Examples of weight-bearing aerobics include walking, dancing and low-impact aerobics. These activities work to improve bones in the legs, hips and lower spine.
Flexibility exercises
Flexibility exercises help to increase joint mobility and improve posture. Stretches are best performed at the end of your exercise session.
